Upon the discovery of oil along the shores of Clear Lake in 1938, Humble Oil & Refining Company (which later became Exxon) purchased 30,000 acres in southern Harris county from a wealthy businessman by the name of James Marion West.  Much of the property remained undeveloped until 1961, when NASA selected Clear Lake as it’s hub for the Manned Spacecraft Center (Later, Lyndon B Johnson Space Center).  The Friendswood Development Company began plans to develop the city and Texas Governor John Connally formally opened Clear Lake City in September 1963.  In 1977, Clear Lake was annexed by the City of Houston.  Clear Creek traverses the city and separates southern Harris County from northern Galveston County. The community was named Clear Lake City after it’s namesake lake, Clear Lake, which serves as the mouth of Clear Creek, emptying into Galveston Bay.  To date, Clear Lake City remains the second largest master planned community in the Houston area and encompasses Clear Lake CityClear Lake ShoresEl LagoKemahLeague CityNassau BaySeabrookTaylor Lake VillageWebster, and portions of Houston and Pasadena.

Students in the Clear Lake area are served by Clear Creek ISD, which is a recognized district of innovation that is home to a diverse community with a passionate spirit of exploration and excellence.  CCISD’s mission is to be distinguished by integrity, meaningful relationships, personalized learning, achievement, and a continuing commitment to Courage, Collaboration, Innovation, and Self-Direction.  As the 29th largest school district in the state of Texas, CCISD spans 103 square miles and boasts 26 elementary (K-5) campuses, 10 Intermediates (grades 6-8), and 7 high schools.  Higher education opportunities abound here as well, including the University of Houston Clear Lake Campus and San Jacinto College extension centers.

Clear Lake boasts a diversified economy, with major sectors of the aerospace industry located here, including NASA, Boeing, Ford Aerospace, McDonnell Douglas, and Lockheed Martin.  Many residents are employed in the booming petrochemical, biomedical, retail, recreation, commercial fishing, and tourism industries in the area.  Houston METRO and Harris County Transit operate throughout the area, creating easier access to the Houston metroplex, just to the northwest of the Clear Lake area.

For recreation, Clear Lake offers numerous parks, abundant fishing and boating opportunities, Armand Bayou Nature Center, Space Center Houston, the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, and the Applewhite Sports & Rec Center.  Cultural events throughout the year include the Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre, Clear Lake Symphony, Gulf Coast Film Festival, Ballunar Festival, Wings Over Houston Airshow, Lunar Rendezvous, The Christmas Boat Parade, and The Blessing of the Fleet.
